Moral values are relative to one’culture. It like the tribe, nation, social unit says is valuable is valuable. Moreover, it does not account for the situation of cultural rebels whose moral values are not those of their neighbors. The cultural rebel’s is not considered ought. Cultural relativism, it turns out, is not forever relative. It rests on a primary value affirmed by cultural relativists themselves: that cultures should be preserved. So cultural relativism does not rely only on is but on what its adherents think ought to be the case.
The strands of epistemological, metaphysical and ethical nihilism weave together to make a rope long enough and strong enough to hang a whole culture. The name of the rope is Loss of Meaning. the inner tensions in nihilism is first, from meaninglessness nothing at a follows, or rather, anything follows. Second, every time nihilists think and trust their thinking, they are inconsistent, for they have denied that thinking is of value or that it can lead to knowledge. There is no meaning in the universe, nihilists scream. Third, while a limited sort of practical nihilism is possible for a while, eventually a limit is reached. Here is another paradox: In order to deny God one must have a God to deny. In order to be a practicing nihilist, there must be something against which to do battle. Fourth, nihilism means the death of art. Fifth, and finally, nihilism poses severe psychological problems for a nihilist. People cannot live with it because it denies what every fiber of their waking being calls for meaning, value, significance, dignity, worth. It is thus that nihilism forms the hinge for modern people. There are no easy answers to our questions, and none of these answers is worth anything unless it takes seriously the problems raised by the possibility that nothing whatever of value exists.

The 3rd bridge of nihilism is: is and ought to be, many naturalists are very moral but they do not have te sense of ought the naturalist takes the world as just matter and that it happens. Is and ought
Moral values have no basis. “Reason cannot establish values, and its belief that it can is the stupidest and most pernicious illusion” the nihilistic view says that there is no wish they say that everything is planned and it will happen as it is supposed to.

There is a paradox. In order to deny God one must have a God to deny. In order to be a practicing nihilist, there must be something against which to do battle. A practicing nihilist is parasite on meaning.
There are five reasons that nihilism is unlivable.
First, from meaningless nothing at all follows, or rather, anything follows.
If the universe is meaningless and a person cannot know and nothing is immoral, any course of action is open.
Second, every time nihilists think and trust their thinking, they are inconsistent, for they have denied that thinking is of value or that it can lead to knowledge.
Third, while a limited sort of practical nihilism is possible for a while, eventually a limit is reached.
Fourth, nihilism means the death of art.
Last, but not least, nihilism poses severe psychological problem for a nihilist.

In summary of pages one eleven to one sixteen, it talks of the flaws of Nihilism, it states that there are too many paradoxes for one to be a true Nihilist. For one, if one were to truly be a nihilist they would have to believe there is no meaning in the world, if there is no meaning then that is the meaning. This contradicts itself, furthermore, they must trust their thinking that everything means nothing, but in order to trust their thinking it must mean something. Also to say there is no God, there first must be a God to deny in which yet again contradicts in the Nihilist’s point of view. Last but not least Nihilist should not be alive since one who is a Nihilist believes there is no meaning, no point in life so why would they continue to live they should just be dead.

3rd bridge: For naturalists, there is always is not ought. Because according to them, whatever exists is right. Thus what values exist are true values. However, cultural anthropoligists say moral values are relative to one’s culture, which makes is equals to ought. It is also a confilct because cultural rebels have different moral standard which is their ought should be is. So it breaks the equation. Human needs a moral standard to measure moral values in ourselves and others. But there does not exist one, which leads to ethical nihilism, a feeling of guilty.
The basic concept of nihilism is that it denies the meaning of everything. It is ironic because it gives the meaning and definition to the word “nihilism”. A true nihilist would not think because thinking is also meaningless at the same time. He would probably sit till die. If there is no meaning in action, then why a nihilist would do that? Every action we make is to keep us alive, if a nihilist choose to do nothing but die. Nihilism would not exist. There exists another paradox is that if a nihilist wants to deny something, he admits its existance and meaning in the first stage. Otherwise, why he would deny that? What is the meaning of denying anything? Nihilism is the death of art. On the other hand, it is the death of everything.

Fifth, and finally, nihilism poses severe psychological problems for a nihilist. People cannot live with it because it denies what every fiber of their waking being calls for- meaning, value, significance, dignity, worth.”Nietzsche,” Bloom writes, “replaces easygoing or self-satisfied atheism with agonized atheism, suffering its human consequences. Longing to believe, along with intransigent refusal to satisfy that longing, is, according to him, the profound response to our entire spiritual condition.”
Nietzsche ended in an asylum. Ernest Hemingway affirmed a “lifestyle” and eventually committed suicide. Beckett writes black comedy. Vonnegut and Adams revel in whimsy. And Kafka-perhaps the greatest artist of them all-lived an almost impossible life of tedium, writing novels and stories that boil down to a sustanied cry: “God is dead! God is dead! Isn’t he? I mean, surely he is, isnt he? God is dead. Oh, I wish, I wish, I wish he weren’t”

The Loss of Meaning keeps the balance of epistemological, metaphysical and ethical nihilism. The example of Kurt Vonnegut Jr. about the astire on theism’s notion of the origin of the universe and human beings. People have been thrown up by an impersonal universe. If the cosmos is to have meaning, we must manufacture it for ourselvs.
Society is only a bunch of windowless monads, a collection of points, not an organic body obeying a superior. It’s not a body, but a bunch.
Most naturalists don’t take their naturalism seriously. They appear to know and dont ask how they know they know. For a naturalist it is the examines life that is not worth living.
Nobody can live with Nihilism. There’re five reasons”
1. From meaninglessness nothing at all follows, or rather, anything follows.
When ever we set ourselves on a course of action, we’re affirming a goal. People creating value by choice, so we’re not living by nihilism.
2. Nihilists think and trust their thinking, they’re in consistent for they’ve denied that thinking is of value or that it can lead to knowledge. They think there’s no meaning in the universe. They’re indeed boxed in.
3. While a limited sort of practical nihilism is possible for a while, eventually a limit is reached. In order to be a practicing nihilist, there must be something against which to do battle. A practicing nihilist is a parasite on meaning. She runs out of energy when there is nothing left to deny. The cynic is out of business when she is the last one around.
4. Nihilism means the death of art. Art implies meaning and is ultimately nonnihilistic, despite the ironic attempt of nihilists to display their wares by means of it.
5. Nihilism poses severe psychological problems for a nihilist. It denies meaning, value, significance, dignity, worth, what every fiber of their waking being calls for.
Nihilism is a hinge for modern people.

Nihilism ultimately means nothing in this world has value, significance, dignity or worth. In the bottom line, all of the concepts of nihilism simply sums up to tell that human beings are only conscious machines with no ability to effect their destiny. Thus, for nihilists, nothing or even anything follows after meaninglessness and every time nihilists think and trust their thinking, they are inconsistent because it contradicts their belief. Nihilists are boxed in their own world. They cannot get absolutely nowhere because “they merely are; they merely think; and none of this has any significance whatsoever.”

This part of the book starts by saying that many naturalists are usually very normal, well behaved as it is said in the book “they are not thieves, they do not tend to libertines and many are faithful husbands and wives” S o that might tel us that they believe in morals because if they did not, they wouldn t be trying to do the right thing. They also explain how they came up to loose meaning saying that everybody ends in total despair of ever seeing ourselves, the world and others as in a way significant, this also shows that they believe in human extiction after death. towards the end they say that the problem is that no one can live the examined life if examination leads to nihilism.

Most naturalists are normal people, they’re not all heartless criminals whose life has no meaning. The world IS only there that’s it. According to cultural anthropologists, moral values are relative to one’s culture. Which basically means IS=ought. Sometimes people rebel against their culture and don’t even follow the values they’ve been taught. Cultural relativism is not forever relative. Some people think certain values are so important that cultures that do not recognize them SHOULD recognize them. Since naturalists have no standard they have no way of knowing when peace is more important than preserving another value. Naturalism places us as human beings in an ethically relative box. For is to know the outside of the box we have to have a connection to the outside but to naturalists there’s no connection. This is ethical nihilism. Nihilism is more a feeling not just a philosophy. With nihilism there is no bar of justice and we are left not in sin but in guilt. A lot of nihilists end in a total despair of ever seeing themselves, the world and others as in any way significant. Nothing has meaning. To nihilists humans just exist, we have no value. Humans alone make value. Most naturalists do not take their naturalism seriously. They’re inconsistent because they affirm their own set of values. Nobody can live a life consistent with nihilism. Just by putting one foot in front of another we are affirming a goal. We are creating value by choice, that’s not nihilism. Nihilists say “there is no meaning in the universe!!!” That means that their only affirmation is meaningless, for if it were to mean anything it would be false. In order to deny god, there must be a god to deny. Nihilism means death of art, but a lot of art has nihilism as it’s ideological core. Nihilism poses severe psychological problems for a nihilist, like Nietzsche, Hemingway and Kafka.

In this chapter it talks about how many naturalist most,so far as we know are moral people. This means how we are being placed in an ethically relative box. In Order for us to know the values within that box are true values, we need a measure imposed on us from outside box.the loss of meaning; this may appear to be a satire on theism’ notion of the origin of the universe and human beings, but it is quite the contrary. It is a satire on the naturalist view, for it shows our human dilemma. Why, then, arent’t most naturalist nihilist? The obvious answer is the best one; most naturalist do not take their naturalism seriously. They appear to know and don’t ask how they know they know. For naturalist it is the examine life that is not worth living. There are no easy answers to our questions and none of these answers is worth anything unless it takes seriously the problem raised by possibility that nothing whatever of value exists.

Naturalists are ones who do not know the standards. In a sense, they don’t know when to stop. They put humanity into a box which has no outside connection, but for us to understand the universe we have to have a connection. For naturalists, there is no link between them and the world. It is complete disconnection, which eventually leads to the feeling of Nihilism. Nihilism can also be a philosophy along with it it being a feeling. When you feel Nihilism, you feel nothing. The universe is pointless and so is everything else that comes with it. Relationships, procreation, etc. None of it matters to a Nihilist. However, there is no consistency in this philosophy. You are going against your Nihilistic beliefs if you do a single thing. There is also no consistency in Naturalism, because they set their own standards, which already goes against their philosophy.

Is and ought many naturalist are very moral people remember that for a naturalist the world is merely there it does not provide humanity with a sense of ought ness the strands of epistemological metaphysical and ethical nihilism weave together to make a rope long enough and strong enough to hang a whole culture the trouble is that no one can live the examined the lead to nihilism for nobody can live a life consistent with nihilism it is thus that nihilism forms the hinge for modern people

Recently we talked about the third bridge. This chapter mainly talks about is and ought. Many naturalists are actually moral people and they are not thieves. It also talks about an argument and it can be sat that naturalism places us as human beings in an ethically relative box. There is nothing outside the box; there is no moral plumb line, no ultimate, non changing standard of value. This chapter also tells About the loss of meaning and inner tensions in nihilism. It is thus that nihilism forms the hinge for modern people. Anyway, the three bridges help me learn more about nihilism.

many naturalists are very moral people. they are not thieves ,they do not tend to be libertines.Ethical naturalists contend that moral truths exist, and that their truth value relates to facts about physical reality.Even if the concept of an “ought” is meaningful, this need not involve morality. let us see, that the distinction of vice and virtue is not founded merely on the relations of objects, nor is perceived by reason.Although i can not say i know what is the nihilism ,the three bridges help me learn more .

The third bridge is talking about many naturalists most, so far as we know are very moral people. They are not thieves, they do not tend to be libertines. Naturalism places us as human beings in an ethically relative box. For us to know what values within that box are true values, we need a moral plumb line by which we can evaluate the conflicting moral values we observe in ourselves and others. Thus does naturalism lead to nihilism. If we take seriously the implications of the death of God., the disappearance of the transcendent, the closedness of the universe, we end right there.

In the short summary , the third bridge tells us about is and ought. First naturalists are very moral people. They are not thieves, they do not tend to be libertines. For naturalists the world is merely there. It all about is. But morality is about what ought to be. According to naturalists , the moral values relate to one’s culture. Nihilism is unlivable for five reasons:
First nothing has meaning therefore any course of action can be taken. Yet when we purposely do things we are affirming a goal.Second nihilists think and trust their thinking. They affirm that nothing has meaning, if that statement is true then that statement would not mean anything. What
Third a practicing nihilist must have something to deny. When there is nothing left to deny he will be out of business. Forth nihilists attempt to express themselves through art, but the art itself has structure and the meaning of nihilism, so it cannot be nihilistic. Finally, people cannot live as nihilists because it goes against everything they feel and long for, everything that is built into them by God. Thus nihilism usually ends in insanity or suicide.

Nihilists have no moral laws therefore they can do whatever they want, because what they do is right. They also believe that there is no value in things. There is a contradict in their belief : to deny an existence of God there must be a God to deny. You can;t express Nihiist’s worldview in art so there is no art, because art is creation that they don’t believe in. Since Nihiists don’t believe in anything eventually they just kill themselves so it’s not really possible to be a nihilist

3 02 2014

Being a nihilist in my opinion is impossible. In my opinion being a nihilist is having no feelings and not able to think because you see the truth but you just dont want to believe it and by not believe it that is a bilief too and by believing in something means then that your not nihilist. In order to fully be nigilist is if your blinded from reality meaning that your basically in a dream or something so that you dont have to face reality so in this case your not exposed to reality. A nihilist saying there is no god then that is also in some ways a belief . So to be totally nihilist is to be able not to think

3 02 2014
11

Being a nihilist is really hard because they don’t reallt have laws that can control them, they have no feeling about everything, they think death is a art becasue they think it is, i don’t think it’s good to become a nihilist, they can do anything they want and they think it’s right, so i don’t think that being a nihilist is ok for anyone at all

This third chapter of the third bridge:is and ought tells us that people are very moral and have dignity. For the naturalist the world is merely there, we know that it doesnt provide a sense of ought because for them its only is. No body can live a life exactly according to nihilism because nihilist think and think that what they think is real. These five reason explain why nihilism is unlivable.
First is that if the universe doesnt make sense is just there and is useless then no body can know and nothing is immoral.
The second is that when a nihilist comes to the point of thinking and trusting their thoughts they always contradict themselves.
Third has a paradox that says that “in order to deny God on must have a God to deny” so if they have nothing to go against they will eventually run out of energy.
Fourth, there is a paradox for modern art, the fourth is just death of art.
Fifth, people cannot follow nihilsm because it denies things like dignity, worth, meaning and value.
This part of the novel shows us how crazy nihilsm is and how hard it is to follow it if you believe in things like value and dignity, it is against everything people come across in life.

nihilism is ought of many people with same thought which there is no meaning in the universe that means their only affirmation is meaningless and anything it would be false. many people in nihilism are anthropologists they recognizing moral values are relative to one s culture.it does not account for the situation of cultural rebel`. anthropologist are not culture relativists same think certain values are so important that culture that do not recognize them should recognize by them those people end up with loss their meaning because if nothing has meaning and the universe does not also they are not have meaning to they can t proved that by themself
